100% 75% fiscal year in July. By the time the fiscal year had come to an end, we had reached 10.35 percent alumni giving. Reaching the ten percent mark leſt me with a visual that served as a powerful motivator. Undoubtedly, you have seen the representation of an iceberg from a water-level view. A mere 10 percent of the iceberg is visible, while 90 percent lies undetectable below the water's surface. I began to think of the hidden potential in the 90 per- cent of graduates below the surface. The impact of this potential could literally be life-changing at Carson-Newman. 50% 25% 13.38% 9.05% 7.10% 6.53% 10.35% 7.63% On our way to unleashing such potential, we are asking alumni to help us reach this year's goal: 15 percent alumni giving. We also want to continue to reconnect with our alums. You may notice an increase in contacts from us over the next year through phone calls, letters, e-newsletters and this magazine. We hope you will stay in touch and come back home to visit. We also encourage you to take an opportunity to meet, talk with, or read about some of our current students and see how our beloved institution continues to transform lives. Most importantly, we hope you will consider making an unrestricted donation to the Annual Fund to help ensure future students have the same op- portunities for decades to come. 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 declining trend came to be. Because of this, we set out to recon- nect with our alumni by phoning them– all of them. Our Phon- athon team, comprised of almost 20 students, began calling our alumni-base. It was wonderful to hear the team recount mem- ory aſter fond memory shared by our alumni. We heard about everything from legendary pranks to the beginnings of lifelong relationships. Former students shared with current students their favorite professors, time-honored traditions, and unforget- table memories. This was the Carson-Newman I knew. This is the Carson-Newman our current students are living. As the memories began to add up, so did the alumni giving per- centage. We set a goal of reaching 10 percent by the end of the So, "What exactly does the Annual Fund do?" It provides unre- stricted giſts to C-N. What is an unrestricted giſt? It is a giſt that grants the University the ability to meet needs wherever they might be. It's that simple. Unrestricted giſts allow C-N to meet critical budgetary needs, attract top-tier faculty, purchase technology for classrooms, and maintain campus facilities. The best part is that unrestricted giſts can be any amount. Even more impor- tantly, AF provides valuable scholarships for our students, help- ing bridge a financial gap to a Carson-Newman degree. It also helps many first generation students realize that a Carson-Newman education is possible. Simply put, Annual Fund changes lives. I know it did mine. Justin Ball is director of Carson-Newman's Annual Fund. He earned his BS from C-N in 2004. JOURNEY fall 2011 23 C-N ALUMNI GIVING PERCENTAGE
