October 6, 2011. A native of Jefferson City, Pat entered Carson-Newman in 1964, one of three students to integrate C-N that year. She holds the distinction of being the first African-American female graduate of the institution. Graduating in 1968, she was hired as the first youth coordinator of the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee. She helped establish several programs to motivate, inspire, and increase educational opportunities for Knoxville children including a Higher Education Program, high school tutorial program, and other initiatives that helped educate and open doors for area youth. She was promoted to manager of the East Knoxville Neighborhood Center in 1979. In 1997 she became administrator of elections for Knox County making many significant changes to the election process, increasing the number of early voting sites, and enhancing training of elections staff. She is survived by her sister Charlotte Tate, and several extended family members including former C-N employees George and Gladys Clay, and Mary Phipps.
