THE TOP 1 USA HOCKEY MOMENTS of USA Hockey Magazine compiled the following list of the 75 top moments in the illustrious 75-year history of USA Hockey. From the creation of the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States in 1937 to milestones reached during the 2011-12 season, there is a lot to like about USA Hockey. (Editor's Note: These milestones are not placed in any specific order of importance.) 1. 9 The U.S. Olympic Team beats the powerful Soviet Union on Feb. 22, 1980, in what becomes known as the "Miracle on Ice." Two days later, the U.S. rallies to beat Finland, 4-2, to win the gold medal at the Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games. 2. Under the direction of Jack Riley, the U.S. wins the gold medal at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, Calif. 3. The U.S. skates off with the first-ever gold medal in women's ice hockey at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. 4. The U.S. rallies to beat Canada in Montreal to win the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. 9. Zach Parise scores with 23.5 seconds remaining to send the gold-medal game at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games into overtime, where Canadian Sidney Crosby scores the winning goal. The U.S. comes home with the silver medal. 5. New Haven, Conn., Bantam team wins the first AHAUS Youth National Championship in 1948, and repeats the next year. 6. The first player development camp is held in 1978 in Squaw Valley, Calif. Development Program, based out of Ann Arbor, Mich., is established in 1996. 7. 56 USA Hockey 75TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE PROGRAM The National Team 8. The Amateur Hockey Association of the United States is formed on Oct. 29, 1937. Tom Lockhart of New York City is elected president and Philip E. Thompson of Atlantic City is selected as secretary- treasurer. AHAUS would change its name to USA Hockey in 1990. 10.
