USA HOCKEY MAGAZINE THROUGH THE PAGES OF TIME I USA Hockey Magazine Has Taken On Different Names And Looks While Holding Steady To A Basic Philosophy Over the years, the official publication of the American Hockey Association of the United States, and eventually USA Hockey, has endeavored to achieve a specific mis- sion: to tell the stories of the people and the programs that are a part of this great organization. From Mite to adult players, from parents to coaches, officials to adminis- trators, and regular old hockey fans to boot, it's never easy to satisfy the interests and demands of such a vast and varied reader- ship. But that is a challenge the magazine's editorial staff has always welcomed. However, USA Hockey (formerly the n the premier issue (September/October 1959) of United States Amateur HOCKEY magazine, Editor/Publisher Fenton Kelsey, Jr. wrote the following in his op-ed column entitled "Playing The Game": The editorial policy of this magazine is to encourage the growth and development of this tremendous sport in the United States. Hockey is growing so rapidly, and is attracting so many participants and enthusiasts south of Canada, that there is a big need and place for a source of information, ideas and highlights. And so began the origins of USA Hockey Magazine. At the time it had a different name and proudly claimed to be the "United States' only magazine on that tremendous sport – ice hockey." to more than 425,000 players, coaches and officials in the United States. Over the years, the publication has under- gone several name changes and even more facelifts: from standard magazine style to newspaper print to tabloid size and back to a standard format. Amateur Hockey Association of the United States) did not technically own the magazine until it was purchased from Kelsey in the fall of 1979. At that time it was called United States Hockey & Arena Biz magazine, and its circulation was approximately 32,000. Today, USA Hockey Magazine is mailed Back in 1959, Kelsey wrote, "We have no plans of shooting the moon, being a LIFE magazine, or for that matter, of even intro- ducing hockey to the moon." Some 53 years later, as the organization cel- ebrates its 75th anniver- sary, we take a differ- ent approach from our esteemed predecessor. We continue to reach for the moon, and the stars for that mat- ter, while keeping our feet planted firmly on the ice. Our deserve nothing less.
