Cross-industry organizations DDL2017 and additional activities of The Aerosol Society sol research through events and a monthly members' newsletter. Also, over the last year, the Society has in- vested in a new and updated web- site to support members in forming an online aerosol science communi- ty where profile information and a database of research can be viewed and shared. In addition, one of the Society's primary aims is the encourage- ment and support of early career scientists. It invests thousands of pounds annually in studentships, travel and research awards to eligi- ble Society members. Additional events e Society organizes multiple events for both members and non-members. Its annual Funda- mentals of Aerosol Science Course provides interdisciplinary training for scientists new to aerosol science. is year, it will be held at the Uni- versity of Birmingham on Novem- ber 8 and will precede the Annual Aerosol Science Conference, now in its 31st year, on November 9. e theme of that conference will be "Pushing the Limits in Aerosol Measurements." e meeting will also include the Aerosol Society's annual general meeting. e Society also holds specialized meetings on topics such as aerosols in the atmosphere and aerosols in combustion and energy. A January 2017 meeting was held on atmo- spheric ice nucleation as well as a June meeting on bioaerosols. To join the Aerosol Society or for further information, please visit www.aerosol-soc.com. In 2017, Drug Delivery to the Lungs (DDL) will celebrate its 28th anniversary. e conference attracts scientists, academics, clini- cians, regulators and industrial ex- perts who specialize in all aspects of inhalation medicine develop- ment. At least 600 delegates are expected to attend what has grown to be one of the world's largest respiratory-focused conferences. e meeting will be held from 11:00 AM on Wednesday, Decem- ber 6 to 1:00 PM on Friday, De- cember 8 at the Edinburgh Interna- tional Conference Centre in Edinburgh, UK. It will focus on the following topics: • Inhaled therapy in special popu- lations • Emerging therapeutics and novel respiratory medicines • Inhalation devices and aerosol science • Modeling and simulations in inhalation science Highlights of DDL2017 e DDL lecture will be presented by Professor Myrna Dolovich, who will discuss "e evolving land- scape in inhalation therapy in the last 60 years." e conference will also include the first DDL Emerging Scientist Lec- ture and Award. e recipient who presents the lecture will be chosen for demonstrating significant scien- tific accomplishment or innovation during the early stages of their ca- reer in inhalation science. e extremely popular Pat Burnell Award will be presented again. e award enables a young re- searcher to present their work as a poster and on the podium. Awards for the best academic and best in- dustrial posters will be presented at an evening reception. Pre-conference symposium On the morning of Wednesday De- cember 6, the pre-conference sym- posium "Designing Inhalers for Children and Infants," will be spon- sored by SimInhale. Presentations by leading researchers will be fol- lowed by a networking buffet lunch. Free admission for students In 2016, the DDL committee decided that all students should be able to attend DDL for free, in order to engage with world re- nowned scientists, promote their own work and gain the experi- ence of attending a large confer- ence. Students wishing to attend DDL2017 must register online to reserve their places. For further information on DDL2017, please visit www.ddl- conference.com. Aims of The Aerosol Society e Aerosol Society, which has been in existence for 30 years, is a scien- tific, non-profit organization aimed at extending knowledge of airborne particles. Its membership consists of scientists drawn from academia, government bodies and industry. Members' interests are numerous and include climate and atmo- spheric modeling, nanotechnology, development of inhaled therapies and air pollution. A committee of volunteers pro- motes all scientific branches of aero- 6 August 2017 Inhalation
