32H July 2018 Tablets & Capsules Invertebrate animals offer new source of omega-3 STIRLING, Scotland—Omega-3 fatty acids can be sourced from cor- als, worms, mollusks, and other marine vertebrates, according to researchers at the University of Stirling. It was previously believed that microalgae, bacteria, and other marine microbes were the primary producers of omega-3. However, many invertebrate animals possess desaturases enzymes that enable them to produce omega-3. This dis- covery could potentially change the understanding of omega-3 long- chain polyunsaturated fatty acids production in the scientific commu- nity and dietary supplement industry.
