ZOO NEWS MEMBER MAGAZINE 07 03 VOLUME 38 SEPTEMBER 20 18 CELEBRATE NATIONAL THREATENED SPECIES DAY National Threatened Species Day is a harsh reminder that extinction is forever. Don't let Victoria's most elusive and unknown species disappear without a fight. This September 7, join Zoos Victoria in the fight against native wildlife extinction by visiting our zoos and showing your support. Top to bottom, from L-R: CLEANING OUT EXHIBIT, TRIMMING PLANTS AND VEGETATION Yvette trims back the vegetation and removes any weeds. PUTTING OUT FOOD & WATER IN EXHIBIT Plains-wanderers are insectivores which means Yvette creates meals that consist of fly pupae, hard boiled eggs, insectivore mix, finely cut greens and a fine seed mix for them every day. She also needs to collect insects such as mealworms and small crickets, weigh the food and top up the water in the aviary. WATCHING THE BIRD ON VIDEO FOOTAGE FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE Once back at the office, a big part of Yvette's day is to review the CCTV camera footage from the night before and watch all the videos from the cameras that are fixed in the aviary. If the birds are living in a breeding pair, Yvette will keep a lookout for any interactions between the pair and record these notes. EXPLORING THEIR NEW HOME The first Plains-wanderer at Werribee Open Range Zoo arrived after she was found more than 100km from the grasslands where her species normally lives in Victoria. VET CHECK Each bird is regularly checked by keepers and vets to make sure they are well, behaving normally, eating and using the exhibit.
