Tablets & Capsules May 2019 29 facilities. During lunch and coffee breaks, attendees had the opportunity to ask presenters more questions or pick each other's brains. Many attendees were able to implement what they learned in the course almost immediately when they returned to work. "The training course covered topics that overlapped with various issues that we've encoun- tered in our manufacturing project," said Travis Irving, a process specialist in product development at Metagenics, Gig Harbor, WA. "The Techceuticals team described a detailed analytical method to respond to those issues, and the course overall was extremely helpful in pointing us in a direction we believe will improve a wide range of pro- duction processes at our facility." For Tousey and his guest presenters, this seems to be an unspoken rule. Each speaker broke down complex opera- tions and scientific processes to their most basic princi- ples, explained industry terms and trends, and welcomed questions and engagement from the attendees. Most importantly, each presentation was followed by a hands-on demonstration. Attendees were invited to see a process up close and assist in the operation. Attendee Brittini Gehring, chief botanical officer at RidgeCrest Herbals, Salt Lake City, UT, said, "The course provided excellent content and hands-on experi- ence on the overall manufacturing process. It covered step-by-step how each process and device worked and allowed us to ask questions along the way and has left me feeling much more confident and prepared for working with contract manufacturers and equipment suppliers." Learning was not only limited to the classroom and lab. Tousey took the presenters and attendees on a tour of Federal Equipment's warehouse next door to see older and newer models of tablet presses and capsule fillers from several well-known manufacturers—the same equip- ment that the attendees likely use or will use in their own Photo 8: Training attendees gather around a Bosch capsule filler for a hands-on lab demonstration on proper tooling setup and how to optimize a production encapsulation process.
