The certification system for cocoa is run by three nonprofit organiza- tions, Utz, Rainforest Alliance, and Fairtrade. These certifying organi- zations set the standards and rules for farms to follow and then audit those farms to ensure compliance. If farms follow the rules, they can advertise their certification and sell cocoa for a higher price to buyers, usually around 10 percent more than uncertified cocoa. However, four auditing firms employed by Utz in Ivory Coast were discovered by the company to have significant problems during routine monitor- ing of the certification process. Utz indicated that these problems did not result in any sanctions for farm- ers or approvals of cocoa batches being rescinded. The company did, however, stop the auditing and certification process within Ivory Coast in April 2019 to revamp the process. The farms located within nationally protected forests are also no longer certified and only rep- resent a small part of the 423,000 cocoa farms in Ivory Coast. Utz, Amsterdam, the Nether- lands, is a certification program for coffee, tea, cocoa, and hazelnuts. In 2018, Utz merged with the Rainfor- est Alliance, an international non- profit organization working with agriculture, business, and forests to make responsible business normal.
