32H January 2016 Tablets & Capsules nutra news Wellness supplements market to approach $250 billion by 2020 PUNE, India—The value of the global market for wellness supplements will increase from $183.1 billion in 2015 to $249.9 billion by 2020, according to MarketsandMarkets. The increase equals a 6.4 percent com- pound annual growth rate (CAGR). North America is expected to domi- nate the market, although Asia and the rest of the world are expected to grow at a 7.5 percent CAGR from 2015 to 2020. Dietary supplements accounted for the largest portion of the wellness supplements market in 2015, and the report predicts it will continue to grow due to an expanding geriatric popula- tion, growing incidences of chronic diseases, and more people focusing on healthy lifestyles. ChromaDex's Niagen receives NDI status, research support I RV I N E , C A — C h r o m a D e x 's Niagen, a brand of nicotinamide ribo- side (NR)was named a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI). It is the first and only commercially available form of NR, and the company says a human clinical study showed that a single dose of Niagen can safely elevate NAD+ in a user's bloodstream by as much as by 2.7 times. NAD+ is a naturally occur- ring co-enzyme found in milk that sup- ports cellular metabolism and facilitates efficient conversion of blood glucose to energy. The National Institute of Aging (NIA), Bethesda, MD, plans to use Niagen in its research on the effects of NR on two neurodegenera- tive disorders known as Cockayne syn- drome and ataxia telangiectasia in mouse models. Additionally, Jarrow Formulas, Los Angeles, CA, plans to launch a national retail product that contains Niagen. GOED updates voluntary monograph SALT LAKE CITY, UT—The Global Organization of EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) updated its volun- tary monograph, which sets a quality standard for oxidation, environmental contaminants, and fatty acid analysis in omega-3 oils. It was updated to address cod liver oil standards and to add details about oxidation testing of fla- vored oils. All GOED members are required to comply with the mono- graph's specifications. ODS, NCCIH fund CARBON program BETHESDA, MD—The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and the National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) have jointly funded the Centers for Advancing Research on Botanical and Other Natural Products (CARBON) program. Five research centers have received grants from the program to develop new research approaches and technologies for the chemical and bio- logical investigation of natural prod- ucts. Three of the research centers are part of the Botanical Dietary Supplements Research Centers. In 2015, they began receiving research grants of $2 million per year for 5 years. Two other centers, which are leading the Centers for the Advancement of Natural Product Innovation and Technology initiative, are receiving a combined research grant of $1.25 million per year for 5 years.
