4 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } DECEMBER/JANUARY 2015/2016 { letter from the publisher } The SOMM Journey WE MAY BE A PRINT PUBLICATION, but the "real" SOMM Journal is a series of exhilarating journeys out- side our pages. We're experiencing real life here, and our bi-monthly magazine is a diary of that touchy- feely-tasting world. I am hopeful that you, our promi- nent and influential industry profes- sional, will partake in the educational and exciting opportunities we have to offer for 2016. First up is our second annual Cru Artisan College (see pages 54–55 and the back cover for more details), a four-city tour of tastemak- ers (wine, cheese, charcuterie!). We'll be in Atlanta (2/28–29), New York (3/1), Houston (3/2) and Miami (3/3)—so please come meet us! In April, we gear up for The Paso Robles CAB Collective, where we encourage wine professionals to explore this world-class region and experience one-on-one interaction with educators, winemakers and all the while, visiting rural "cowboy country" paradise. (April 13–14). selected contributors Paul Coker is Lead Sommelier at Stonehill Tavern, the Forbes Four-Star Michael Mina restaurant at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Orange County, California. Coker has an Advanced Sommelier certificate, and oversees a wine selection of more than 700 bottles with a focus on boutique producers in the California wine regions. Prior to becom- ing a sommelier, Coker spent seven years as a cook and leverages his culinary background to create wine pairings on a molecular level. In his free time, Coker enjoys playing hockey, mountain biking and reading. David D. Denton is a sommelier at Charlie Palmer Steak in Washington, DC. In addition to holding all three certifications from the Society of Wine Educators, he holds the Official Sherry Educator title from the Consejo Regulador of Sherry. David is a Level Three Advanced Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers, and is an International Bordeaux Wine Educator with the C.I.V.B. He has been lead sommelier for many prestigious events including both WineFuture conferences and the Vinoble Fortified and Dessert Wine Festival, as well as every SWE conference since 2007. Jade Helm, DWS, CS, CSW is a freelance writer, consultant, and educator residing in the Willamette Valley. A Certified Sommelier, she also holds credentials from the Society of Wine Educators (Certified Specialist in Wine) and the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (Diploma in Wine and Spirits). More about Jade can be found on her website Tasting Pour at tastingpour.blogspot.com. Jessie Birschbach is the newly appointed Wine Editor for The SOMM Journal as well as its sister publication, THE TASTING PANEL. Jessie is a Certified Sommelier raised on the floors of fine-dining restaurants in Beverly Hills. Wine, comedy, home brew- ing, Jeeps and Angels baseball fill most of her heart, but writing is the reason it beats. That and her really cute family. At the Napa Valley Film Festival premiere party for SOMM: Into the Bottle (sequel to the hit documentary SOMM), Meridith May meets up with Master Sommelier and SommSelect entrepreneur Ian Cauble. PHOTO: ALEXANDER RUBIN FOR THE 2016 SOMMELIER SUMMIT AT THE CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA AT GREYSTONE The Sommelier Summit returns to Napa Valley, April 24-26, 2016, bringing together the best and brightest of the wine community. The educational aspect of this annual event is matched only by the opportunity to network with other somm-minded individuals, rub elbows with industry icons and taste through the best wines accumulated for this three-day affair. The SOMM Journal will offer scholar- ships to ten "Up-and-Coming" wine buyers/sommeliers who are looking to further their careers by attending this prestigious summit. If you are interested in being awarded 2016 "Sommelier Summit/ SOMM Journal Up-and-Comer," send me an email, audio file, or video, tracing your journey in the wine world and where you'd like it to take you. In addition to receiving a full scholarship to the summit, those selected for this honor will receive round-trip transportation and two nights hotel stay in Napa Valley. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Have a Happy New Year and we will see you in 2016!
