66 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } DECEMBER/JANUARY 2015/2016 { up close } I VISITED THE CECCHI WINE ESTATES IN TUSCANY this summer, where fourth-generation brothers Andrea and Cesare Cecchi are honoring the old (Chianti Classico) and building the new (the Villa Rosa estate in La Maremma). Without the distractions of the winery, the earthy food for which Tuscany is famed—to say nothing of the wines—I sat down with the brothers on a recent visit to New York City at Rooftop lounge at the Citizen M Hotel, overlooking Times Square, where they hosted a vertical tasting of the Cecchi Chianti Classico Riserva di Famiglia for city somms. Cesare, the elder, has long been the businessman, while Andrea was the master oenologist overseeing all viticulture and winemaking. After the death of their father, he joined his older brother in a new management role, and in taking the winery into the future. What are some of your visions and what do you want to accomplish? Cesare Cecchi: Being a family business is much more long term—it's not about making money every year for the shareholders, it's more about seeing things in a much longer way. We don't bother if one year isn't as good as it should be, but you want to make sure your name, your company and your brand is more appreciated. Andrea Cecchi: We are historically from the Chianti Classico area but we need to invest in a very prestigious area where the soils make a big difference. And so long-term business means to be able to find areas where you can be more [successful] in terms of perception and quality inside the bottle. You have to be patient.
