School of Thought Developing a Wor ld Vision at Middlebur y Institute of International Studies B Y B R E T T W I L B U R M iddlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) informs graduate students from around the world in such complex arenas as terrorism studies, international environ- mental policy and conflict resolution. The student body is diverse: some have worked as translators and interpreters at the Olympics, others have served in the Peace Corps, in the military or worked for nonprofits or in the for-profit sector. All students speak more than one language. Formerly known as the Monterey Institute of International Studies, the university, founded in 1955, each year draws men and women from 40- 50 countries, most of whom are in their late 20s and early 30s. These stu- dents are passionate about making the world a better place. Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Institute, Jeff Dayton-Johnson, says, "the school gives US and international students the tools they need to understand languages and cultures in order to break down barriers to peace, progress and prosperity." Ten languages are taught, and students study relevant content in the appropriate language. "We train military and intelligence to be language teachers in Pashto, which is spoken in Afghanistan…and students can take international trade in Mandarin," he says.
