SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL Redesigned Bernardus Lodge & Spa Wins Awards C alifornia State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) will welcome former NAACP di- rector Ben Jealous as this year's keynote commence- ment speaker in May. Jealous, a Monterey Peninsula native, was just 35 years old when he was named national executive for the NAACP. The Columbia University and University of Oxford graduate was the youngest leader in the organization's history, addressing voting rights, early childhood education, health care and gun law reform during his tenure. Jealous, who now works as a sen- ior partner at Kapor Capital and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from CSUMB this spring, as well. A CSUMB Doctor of Humane Letters degree will also be awarded to Sylvia Panetta, co-chair and CEO of the Marina-based Panetta Institute for Public Policy. In addition to presenting an annual lecture series that features nationally known leaders, the institute encourages civic involvement among young people. Panetta's organization sponsors Congres- sional internship oppor tunities for college students, coordinates the Monterey County Reads program and oversees other student leadership and re- search programs. CSUMB Recognizes Ben Jealous and Sylvia Panetta F ollowing a multi-million dollar renova- tion unveiled last spring, Bernardus Lodge & Spa has earned Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star awards for the Lodge, The Spa at Bernardus Lodge and the property's signa- ture culinary venue, Lucia Restaurant & Bar.
