Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Man and Woman of the Year Campaign B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D S ince 2012, nearly $1 million has been raised for the fight led by the Monterey Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to find cures for and aid people afflicted with those and other blood cancers. And it was accomplished via the spirited and lively Man and Woman of the Year (MWOY) competition. MWOY began in San Francisco in 1990 and has since spread across the nation. Local chapters nominate community members who then campaign to entice the public to vote for them by attending fundraising events or sim- ply by making an online donation. There are six nominees for 2016, announced at a Kickoff Event held March 2, 2016. They are: Maddox Haberdasher, Kim Pereira, Nancy Scheid, Natasha DiPretoro, Parris Hodges and Stephan Lins. "The Man & Woman of the Year Campaign exemplifies the impact that driven and passion- ate individuals can make on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission to cure blood can- cers," says Courtney Karnes, Silicon Valley & Monterey Area Chapter Executive Director. "This year's candidates are exceptional mem- bers of the Monterey Bay community. We are humbled by their enthusiastic participation to join us in this fight." Winners will be announced at a Grand Finale gala at the Monterey Hyatt on Saturday, May 14. Visit mwoy.org/svmb for each nominee's scheduled events and to purchase tickets.
