I bought the chassis of a wrecked Cobra around 1989 and spent nearly 20 years finding original Cobra parts. Over the course of 15 years, I completely restored this car myself. I rebuilt the motor and the transmission, welded body panels, painted it, installed the interior—basically every system in the car. I'm confident it's the only car that has been completely restored here in Pebble Beach. The original was a street car with wire wheels, but I did this restoration in the form of an independent competition car that would have raced in 1963. Everything on it would have been available in Carroll Shelby's shop at that time. It's been finished for about two years and there were lots of exciting milestones along the way: When I started putting trim parts on the body I had hammered into shape myself; the first time I fired up the engine; and finally the first time I put it in gear and drove away. I take it out a couple of times a month—on nice days only. When I take my wife Joy to the Carmel library, I park on Ocean Avenue and people always gather around. It starts a mini car show everywhere we go."
