Tablets & Capsules October 2014 32E crises could be prevented between 2013 and 2020 with phytosterol supplemen- tation, eliminating $34 billion in expen- ditures over that period. The full report is available at no charge at supplement- forsmartprevention.org. Bayer hit with "unsubstantiated claims" motion WASHINGTON, DC—The US Department of Justice on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission filed a motion requiring Bayer to show cause why it should not be held in civil con- tempt for violating a 2007 court order prohibiting the company from making unsubstantiated health claims for dietary supplements. The motion calls Bayer to task for claiming that its Phillips' Colon Health probiotic dietary supplement product can "defend against" constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating, despite lack of "competent and reliable scientific evidence." The company disputes the allegation and asserts it will defend itself "vigorously." Vitamins may preserve hearing, study says BETHESDA, MD—Vitamin supple- ments appear to protect against age- related hearing loss, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers reviewed data gleaned from 1,910 people, aged 50 to 80, enrolled in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Exami- nation Survey. Audiological tests showed that those with high lifelong vitamin C intake had better mid-fre- quency hearing than others, and those with higher intakes of A, B, and C vita- mins had better hearing in general. Vitamin E insufficiency poses significant health risks, study says CORVALLIS, OR—Sufficient vitamin E intake is crucial to healthy fetal devel- opment during pregnancy and growth in the first years of life, concludes a review of scientific literature published in Advances in Nutrition. Insufficient vita- min E during the first 1,000 days after conception is linked to increased infec- tion, anemia, stunted growth, neurolog- ical deficits, and overall poor health in both infant and mother. Vitamin E is also associated positively with brain health and cognitive function in old age, says the review. The author notes that it is difficult to obtain sufficient vit- amin E through diet alone, most Amer- icans do not get enough, and identify- ing deficiency is challenging. Iron linked to lower autism risk DAVIS, CA—Mothers of children with autism are significantly less likely to have taken iron supplements before and during pregnancy than mothers of non- autistic children, according to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Low iron intake was linked to a fivefold greater risk of autism in children born to mothers 35 and older or who suf- fered conditions such as obesity, hyper- tension, or diabetes. "Iron is crucial to early brain development, contributing to neurotransmitter production, myeli- nation [healthy nerve development], and immune function. All three of these pathways have been associated with autism," said one of the study's authors.
