42 October 2014 Tablets & Capsules A survey of what's available Laser marking system Marking system uses ultraviolet (UV) cold laser to impart indelible, high-resolution, tamper-evident text, images, and barcodes on as many as 50,000 tablets and capsules per hour. Process causes no chemical or structural changes that could affect product performance. Laser reacts with titanium diox- ide content of tablet or capsule, eliminating ink, chemical waste, cleaning, and drying. Operation is unaffected by wet, dry, or oily capsule surfaces; system can also mark tablets and capsules packaged in UV-transparent blisters. System uses optical recognition to inspect results and rejects poorly marked items. Tri-Star Technologies, El Segundo, CA. Full-circumference printing is nearly impossible to duplicate and makes it easy for end-users to determine product's authenticity, thus serving as an economical anti-counterfeit- ing measure.
