This article summarizes some of the tabletting research conducted at the author's laboratory. ur research at the University of Minnesota has revealed new information about how tablet flashing affects the analysis of powder compressibility and new methods for quantifying tablet brittleness, friability, and indentation hardness. We hope formulation scientists can apply these findings during product development to help them create high-quality pharmaceutical tablets. Impact of tablet flashing on powder compressibility analysis Tablet flashing refers to the presence of protrusions at a tablet's edges after compaction (figures 1a and 1b). It develops because material enters the gap between the punch and die. The phenomenon commonly occurs when a plastically deforming material is compressed under high pressure. Since flashing stems from material flow, its severity is higher when there is: • A large gap between the punch and die, • High compaction pressure, or • A long application of compaction pressure (dwell time).
