(Possible answers: The sky gets light; the sun appears in the sky; they can see clouds and sometimes the moon.) (Possible answers: It hunts for food; it builds its nest.) Have students observe the owl's wide eyes. Help them infer that keen eyesight helps owls hunt at night. Discuss how all animals need to sleep, whether during the day or night. Discuss how people might have a hard time sleeping when the sky is light and being active when the sky is dark. Partner Work  •Give partners a T Chart. Have them label the first column Day and then draw themselves doing something people often do during the day. Repeat for Night in the second column. •Next, have them draw entries to show an owl's activity during the day and night. They may color each column to represent the colors of the day and night sky. •Have partners discuss their T Charts. Then invite groups to discuss their T Charts with the class. (It is light.) Differentiated Instruction Language Support for Partner Work Discussion BEGINNING INTERMEDIATE Have students review their partner work drawings and then ask either/or questions to check understanding. For example: Do owls sleep during the day or at night? At night, is the sky light or dark? Provide Oral Academic Language Frames to help students express their ideas: • In the daytime, many people __. • In the daytime, owls __. • At night, many people __. • At night, owls __. ADVANCED Have students compare most people's activities during the day and night to the activities of owls. Encourage them to use their partner work drawings to illustrate their sentences. (The day sky is light; the night sky is dark.) 3.Infer  ¿Por qué razón podría un búho dormir durante el día y cazar de noche? (Possible answers: It can see in the dark. Other animals might not see it coming.) Day and Night  T5
