Lesson 5 Nighttime por Susan Halko Objectives Science Students will be able to: • Recognize that the sun can only be seen in the daytime.  • Observe that sometimes the moon can be seen at night.  • Observe and describe the moon and the stars in the nighttime sky. Science Academic Vocabulary  estrellas 1 Introduce Tap Prior Knowledge Ask students to describe what the sky looks like at night. Say: El cielo nocturno es oscuro. Pero con frecuencia, en el cielo nocturno podemos ver las  estrellas  y a veces la Luna, porque son brillantes. Set the Purpose and Read Read the heading aloud. Tell students to listen as you read to find out more about the nighttime sky. 2 Teach Science Academic Vocabulary: estrellas Have a student point to the  estrellas  and the label in the photo on page 8. Say: Las  estrellas  parecen diminutos puntos de luz en el cielo nocturno. Read Aloud and Discuss •Read pages 8–9 aloud. Ask: ¿Cómo es el cielo de noche? (Possible answers: The sky is dark at night; we can often see the stars and sometimes the moon.) Discuss how we can see the sun during the day only. •Have students observe the photo on page 8. Ask: ¿Cómo creen que se ven las  estrellas  en el cielo de noche? (Possible answers: tiny points of light that twinkle; tiny white dots of light) •Have students observe the photo on page 9. Ask: ¿Cómo se ve la Luna en esta foto? (bright, shaped like a backward letter C) •Ask students to compare the photos of the moon on pages 7 and 9. Discuss how the apparent shape of the moon changes a little every day or night. T8  Big Ideas Big Book Differentiated Instruction Extra Support Have students draw pictures of the night sky and the day sky. Then have them label the sun, moon, and stars. Ask: ¿Cuándo el Sol ilumina el cielo? (day only) ¿Cuándo podrían ver la Luna en el cielo? (day or night) Challenge Ask students to observe the photos on pages 6–9. Then have them describe each photo. They should identify and describe the objects shown in the sky. Have students share their descriptions with the class or connect them to the photos in the Big Ideas Big Book with sticky notes.
