T10 Big Ideas Big Book Science Misconceptions The Sun Appears to Move Across the Sky Because the sun appears to rise, move across the sky, and set, some students may think that the sun moves around Earth. In fact, the sun only appears to move around Earth. It is Earth that moves through space around the sun. Earth rotates, or spins like a top. This motion causes the cycle of day and night and the apparent motion of the sun. Some people think that the sun appears directly overhead at about noon. In the continental United States, however, the sun is highest in the sky at about noon, but not directly overhead.
