Read the Question and ask students what they already know about where the sun appears in the sky at different times of the day. 2 Build Vocabulary Science Process Vocabulary: observar Use this routine to introduce the word. 1.Pronounce the Word Say observar . Have students repeat it in syllables. 2.Explain Its Meaning Read aloud: Cuando se observa , se aprende sobre un objeto al mirarlo en detalle. 3.Encourage Elaboration Ask: ¿Cómo pueden usar sus sentidos para observar el Sol? Remind students not to look directly at the sun. However, they can use their eyes to find out where the sun is brightest. They can feel the sun's warmth. Vocabulary Support Fill a glass with cool water. Write: I could use ____ to observe ____. Ask students how they could use different senses to observe the water. For example: I could use touch to observe the water. I could dip my finger in and find out how warm or cold it is. (Students may also mention listening while swishing around the water, smelling it, looking at it, etc.) 3 Guide the Investigation •You may distribute Learning Master 11 to each student. It shows the steps of the investigation. Teaching Tips •Make sure students go outside at the same time each day and encourage students to sit in the same place each day. They should pick a simple landmark and draw the same landmark each time. •If possible, observe the sky from an open area so that obstacles, such as tall trees or buildings, don't block the view of the sun. What to Expect Students will observe that the sun is low in the sky early in the day and high in the sky later in the day. •Tell students they will follow the steps on page 11 to answer the Question. Read inquiry steps 1 and 2 aloud with students. Students should observar the sun in the sky outside. •Explain to students that they should include a landmark in their pictures.
