Inquiry eHelp Introduce, continued •Open the Science Inquiry Book to page 14. Read the Question and invite students to tell why they think some objects in the sky look big and others look small. Encourage them to think about distance. 2 Build Vocabulary Science Process Vocabulary: observar Use this routine to introduce the word. 1.Pronounce the Word Say observar . Have students repeat it in syllables. 2.Explain Its Meaning Read aloud: Se observa cuando se aprende algo sobre un objeto a través de los sentidos. 3.Encourage Elaboration Hold up a paper plate. Ask: ¿Qué observan sobre este plato? (It is white, round, and has ridges.) Vocabulary Support Ask students to observe several objects. Encourage them to touch or smell the objects. Have them describe the objects in complete sentences, using the word observe . 3 Guide the Investigation •You may choose to distribute Learning Master 14 to each student. It shows the steps of the investigation. •Read the steps on page 15 of the Science Inquiry Book with students. Explain that the plates represent the sun and another star. •Review the meanings of grande, pequeño, cerca, and lejos. Raise Your SciQ! Nearby Stars The sun is the closest star to Earth. It takes about 8 minutes for solar energy to get from the sun to Earth. In contrast, it takes about 4.2 years for light to travel from our next closest star neighbor—Proxima Centauri—to Earth. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star. It would take tens of thousands of years to travel to it. Proxima Centauri is much smaller than our sun—about an eighth of the size. It is also dimmer than our sun, but it will likely shine for much longer since it is a red dwarf. Proxima Centauri is very faint and impossible to see without a telescope. Its neighbors, Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, are much brighter. •In step 1, set up both chairs, side by side, near the student observation mark.
