Inquiry eHelp Introduce, continued Connect to the Big Idea •Remind students of the Big Idea Question, How are day and night different? Discuss students' ideas about how day and night are different. Explain that the sun lights the sky during the day, so the daytime sky is bright. The sun does not light the sky at night, so the nighttime sky is dark. •Open the Science Inquiry Book to page 6. Read the Question and invite students to share ideas about things that appear in the night sky. (stars, sometimes the moon) 2 Build Vocabulary Science Process Vocabulary:  observar ,  comparar  Use this routine to introduce the words. 1.Pronounce the Word  Say  observar . Have students repeat it in syllables. 2.Explain Its Meaning  Explain: Cuando  observan , usan los sentidos para aprender sobre algo. 3.Encourage Elaboration  Ask: ¿Qué sentidos usan para  observar ? (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) ¿Qué sentido usarán para  observar  objetos en el cielo? (sight) Repeat for the term  comparar . Say: Cuando se  comparan  objetos, se indica en qué se parecen y en qué se diferencian. To encourage elaboration, say:  Comparen  una zanahoria con una habichuela. Ask: ¿En qué se parecen? (Both are vegetables.) ¿En qué se diferencian? (color, shape, taste, etc.) Teaching Tip If students observe the actual daytime sky, remind them not to look directly at the sun. What to Expect Students will observe pictures of the day sky and the night sky. They will create their own pictures. Then students will compare their pictures. Students should understand that the sun lights the sky during the day, that the sky is dark at night, that stars appear in the night sky (provided the sky is clear and is not flooded with artificial light), and that sometimes the moon can be seen at night and sometimes it can be seen during the day. 3 Guide the Investigation •Repeat the inquiry Question. Explain that students will follow the steps on page 7 to find the answer to the Question. You may choose to distribute Learning Master 8 to each student. It shows the steps of the investigation. • Read step 1 aloud. Have students  observar  the pictures of the day sky and the night sky. Also take students outside to  observar  the day sky. Encourage them to  observar  the night sky later at home with a family member. Have students  comparar  what they  observaron  to what they already know. Day and Night  T1f
