Aſter spending six weeks in the rankings in 2011, Memphis greatly improved in 2012 by earning a ranking in 15 of a possible 16 polls. The 15 weeks in the poll marked the most time spent in the ITA rankings by the Tigers in program history.
Entering the poll following a season-opening victory over No. 13 Tennessee, the Tigers rose to a program-best ranking of No. 30 on March 20. The U of M rode its success on the court and in the polls to its first NCAA Championships appearance in 2012.
