Neurotherapy Comes to Carmel B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D D uring a season conducting sport and organizational psychology research with the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team, Dr. Jen Cosmas sustained a head injury from a hockey stick. She suffered dizziness and other symp- toms related to the injury for 15 years until dis- covering neurofeedback, a technique first pio- neered in the 1950s. "The dizziness disappeared after the first session," Cosmas says. Since then she has incorporated neurotherapy into her Carmel-based practice. Neurotherapy is a drug-free, non-invasive technique that works by strengthening specific parts of the brain. She be- gins by asking: "If you got rid of four things in your life that would improve it, what would they be?" Dr. Cosmas says that neurofeedback is effec- tive in treating many conditions, including autism, depression/anxiety. "And it's shown to result in a 35-80 percent retention rate for addiction when combined with another method, such as a 12-step program," she says. "But it's not just for consequences," She says, "it's also for prevention." Utilizing a system called BrainPaint®, Cosmas links the patient to a computer via sensors. The screen provides real-time insight into how the brain reacts to questions. Over time, the tech- nique can help users to improve performance and focus better. "It's crazy how effective neuro- feedback is," Cosmas says. To learn more, please call 866/410-4434 or visit www.neurotherapies.org.
