Tim Bluhm Solo Friday, March 9, 8pm and 10pm Henry Miller Library, Big Sur W ith Big Sur now open to traffic south of the state park, that means one thing: the return of the Henry Miller Library as a venue for films, poetry events, writing work- shops and especially music. One musician who is no stranger to Big Sur, The Mother Hips founder and leader Tim Bluhm, helped create and curate the Hip Nic, now in its 10th year. Bluhm plays a rare and intimate solo show March 9 at the Library. The singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist will bring his vast and varied catalog to this show, which will showcase his California country, folk, rock and soul musical sensibilities. In addition to The Hips, Bluhm also performs with Jackie Greene as the Skinny Singers, with the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann in the Rhythm Devils, Ball-Point Birds with Hips co-founder Greg Loiacono, and with his ex-wife in Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers. Even with two shows, tickets will be very limited. www.henrymiller.org. 48th Annual Next Generation Jazz Festival Friday-Sunday, March 9-11 Monterey Conference Center and Portola Plaza Hotel & Spa O utside of the Monterey Jazz Festival in September, the festival's Next Generation Jazz Festival is easily the best jazz festival between San Jose and Los Angeles. But it's not because of jazz stars performing, but due to more than 1,300 of the country's best stu- dent jazz musicians competing and performing, many of whom will go on to become stars. These top-level musicians compete every year in big bands, combos, vocal ensembles, vocal soloists as well as conglomerate bands from var- ious schools, to become a part of fall's grand- daddy of festivals, the Monterey Jazz Festival. The Wailers Friday, April 27, 8pm Golden State Theatre T he Wailers were part of some of the most iconic reggae songs ever recorded as the backup band for the legendary reggae musician Bob Marley. As Bob Marley & The Wailers, they sold more than 100 million albums, recorded clas- sic songs such as and "One Love," "Stir It Up," "Get Up, Stand Up," "Trenchtown Rock," "Exodus," "Natty Dread," "I Shot the Sheriff," "No Woman, No Cry," "Roots, Rock, Reggae" and "War." Bob Marley & The Wailers were named #4 of the "50 Greatest Bands of All Times" by Spin magazine. Since 1981, just after Marley's death, bassist and co-founder Aston "Family Man" Barrett has joined with other members such as Junior Marvin and Donald Kinsey to keep Marley's legacy alive.
