giving back Sara Kay is content and education specialist for the Specialty Food Association. Wine RayZyn: From Wildfire Disaster to Relief Andrew Cates, co-owner of The Wine RayZyn Co., has found a way to give back to those who were affected by the Northern California wildfires late in 2017. After his 15-acre Napa winery was evacuated, Cates returned to find that his entire wine collection, tractor, and water tanks had melted, and his personal belongings were gone. The grapes on the estate had not yet been harvested, and 15-year-old vines had cooked from the inside out. Cates reached out to the Food Recovery Network, an organization that fights food waste and hunger by recover- ing perishable food, and created Rescue RayZyns. Tons of unharvested, premium grapes that were unsuitable for producing wine as a result of smoke damage, were repurposed as Dark Chocolate Covered CabernayZyns, a superfood snack. Profits will be donated to local relief efforts, as well as to victims of natural disasters in Puerto Rico, Florida, and Houston. Nature Valley: National Park Foundation Partnership Nature Valley granola bars has announced a partnership with the National Park Foundation for the Find Your Park move- ment, which includes a three-year commitment and a donation of up to $3 million. Nature Valley fans can help increase the donation to the National Park Foundation by picking up a 6-count box of Nature Valley Oats & Honey at retail stores across the country. For every box purchased between March 1 and May 15, 2018, Nature Valley will donate 10 cents to NPF, up to $750,000. Nature Valley is also encouraging everyday hikers who are passionate about the outdoors and exploration to tell their stories of what nature, and America's national parks, mean to them. Newman's Own Foundation: #Newmanitarian Campaign Newman's Own Foundation, in recognition of reaching its milestone of $500 million donated to charity, has launched a #Newmanitarian campaign calling for acts of kindness. Participants are asked to visit Newmanitarian.org, take a pledge to give back, and then share their pledge and good deeds via social media. "Paul once asked 'What could be better than to hold out your hand to those less fortunate?' and we believe, as he did, that each of us can help another in some small way," says Bob Forrester, president and CEO of Newman's Own Foundation. "By asking people to commit acts of kindness, we're hoping to spread the idea that philanthropy isn't just about money. It means that we can all do something to make our world a better place." Rahr & Sons Brewing Co.: Works to Wipe Out Kids' Cancer Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. and Wipe Out Kids' Cancer, which provides support and services for those affected by pediatric cancer, are teaming up. Fort Worth-based Rahr & Sons will raise money throughout the year with weekly Wednesday tastings, and other fundraising events. A dollar from each tast- ing admission will be donated to the cause. "We are grateful for national partners like Rahr and the passion they have for our mission," says Chandini Portteus, president and CEO of WOKC. "Partnering offers a great opportunity to highlight the need in pediatric cancer and the vital gaps in funding. Rahr shines as an example of incorporating service and philanthropy into their company culture." 64 ❘ SPECIALTY FOOD MAGAZINE specialtyfood.com
