EDU222 / 3 CREDITS / 3 PERIODS INTRODUCTION TO THE EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER Overview of the exceptional learner with emphasis on factors relating to current practices, identification, characteristics, and educational adaptations. Issues related to mild disabilities, severe disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, and students who are gifted. Prerequisites: None. EDU222 requires an approved field experience. EDU230 / 3 CREDITS / 3 PERIODS CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN EDUCATION Examination of the relationship of cultural values to the formation of self-concept and learning styles. Examination of the role of prejudice, stereotyping and cultural incompatibilities in education. Emphasis on teacher preparation (preservice and/ or inservice) to offer an equal educational opportunity to students of all cultural groups. Prerequisites: None. EDU233 / 3 CREDITS / 3 PERIODS STRUCTURED ENGLISH IMMERSION, ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, AND BILINGUAL TEACHING METHODS Methods of planning, developing, and analyzing lesson plans in all content areas using English Language Learners (ELL) proficiency standards. Emphasis on components of curriculum content, teaching strategies, development/evaluation/ adaptation of teaching materials, and the role of culture in learning. Examines the alignment of ELL proficiency standards to state academic standards. Covers multiple assessment techniques, tracking of student progress using the state mandated English language proficiency assessment, and use of assessment results for placement and accommodation. Prerequisites: (EDU220 or EPD220) or permission of Department or Division. Course Notes: Approved school-based practicum required. EDU233 incorporates curricular framework for the 45-clock hour requirement for SEI endorsement through the Arizona Department of Education. EDU236 / 3 CREDITS / 3 PERIODS CLASSROOM RELATIONSHIPS Analysis of K-12 classroom interactions, classroom environment, and classroom management skills from a teacher's point of view.
