American Governance
Macmillan Reference USA | 5 volumes
January 2016
eISBN: 9780028662558
ISBN: 9780028662497
Governance refers to the various ways by
which the act of governing takes place.
It includes formal government structures
but also the myriad components (such
as voluntary civic associations and public
and private educational systems) that
make up a given political entity and
comprise the communal life of its
citizens. American Governance is a
five-volume publication that provides
scholarship on a wide range of essential
issues related to how Americans govern
themselves. It offers a comprehensive,
bird's-eye view of the complete system
of American governance and the
complementarity of its parts. Includes
750 signed, peer-reviewed entries
exploring key themes. These include
formal frameworks such as the various
U.S. and state constitutions and federal,
state, and local governments, as well as
the formation and action of citizens. It
examines the exercise of individual self-
restraint; the political norms and ideals
that guide the actions of citizens and
leaders; the constitutional and legal
frameworks that reinforce and modify
those norms; and the families, schools,
and congregations that transmit values.
The work also delves into the local
communities, civic associations, and
political associations people form for
collective deliberation and action, along
with the relationships formed between a
people and their elected representatives.
America in the World, 1776
to the Present: A Supplement
to Dictionary of American
History
Charles Scribner's Sons | 2 volumes
February 2016
eISBN: 9780684325057
ISBN: 9780684325026
This new set expands the coverage of
the 3rd edition of the Dictionary of
American History (published in 2003)
to discuss key topics in the emerging
discipline of transnational history. It
follows the same format and style as
the parent set, with nearly 700 entries
examining the United States in the
world from 1776 forward. Through the
prisms of world reactions to events,
policies, etc., and of the impact of U.S.
policies on the world, this set covers the
emergence of America on the world
scene at the dawn of the 20th century,
as well as such expected foreign policy
topics as the Arab-Israeli conflict,
other wars and treaties, anti-imperialism,
and nuclear weapons. It includes key
players like John Adams and the
Marquis de Lafayette, but it also
covers organizations like IBM and the
RAND Corporation, the American
Colonization Society and the Red Cross,
and perhaps more surprising topics such
as Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show,
Captain America, and the television
program Dallas. The transnational
perspective brings new insights to such
domestic topics as Wounded Knee and
the Department of Homeland Security.
Encyclopedia of Islam and the
Muslim World, 2nd Edition
Macmillan Reference USA | 2 volumes
January 2016
eISBN: 9780028662725
ISBN: 9780028662695
The second edition of this well-received
two-volume study of Islam updates and
adds to its predecessor 50 percent new
content. It updates and revises most of
the original 500+ entries and adds new
topics to reflect changes in the Muslim
world since 2004, from the emergence/
re-emergence of Islamic regimes to
challenges to the rule of religious leaders
(Iran), to continuing instability across
North Africa and the Middle East.
The set builds on the first edition's
approach to this still-growing religion:
documenting and analyzing its history,
as well as its doctrinal, legal, social, and
spiritual tenets, while assessing its
influence on all areas of human
activity in the regions where it is
most established—the Middle East,
Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
