Learning Life Skills Through Volleyball B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D I mua" is a Hawaiian word that translates to "to move forward" or "to move ahead." This goal-oriented philosophy is at the core of the philosophy of the IMUA Volleyball Club. The club was founded in 1988 by Vincent Rosa, Sr. At the time, volleyball was a very popular spor t on the Monterey Peninsula, but local high schools did not have volleyball in their athletic programs. Rosa grew up playing volleyball in his native Hawaii and passed his love of the spor t onto a young man, Jason Companion. "I started playing with the club that first year," Companion says. Now director of operations for the club, he puts in long hours. It's a labor of love. "By the time I graduated from Seaside High, I was one of the top outside hitters in the coun- try," he says. "I could have played college volley- ball but decided to turn pro." He regrets that decision and today strives to provide guidance to kids, being a positive role model and encouraging them to stay in school. His passion is contagious. "What I love about what we do is we teach life skills through volleyball," Companion says. "We help kids to succeed in life in general." For more information, visit www.imuavbc.com.
