A Delightfully Analog Holdout in the Digital Age B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D T he Internet age has transformed the world—not always for the better. One unforeseen side effect of having the world at one's fingertips is the near-extinction of the brick-and-mor tar book store. But happily, Carmel is home to a survivor which is quite healthy, thank you. Pilgrim's Way, a "bookstore and garden shop for the adventurous at heart," celebrated its 50th anniversary January 1st. True to its flower power beginnings, the shop specialized in meta- physical books. But make no mistake: Pilgrim's Way has evolved. "Our longevity is due in part to the fact that we have navigated the times and changes in Carmel," says Cynthia Fernandes, co-owner with husband Paul Fridlund. So, while the shelves still contain works on meditation and philosophy, there are also current best sellers, cookbooks and children's books. The Secret Garden next door is a gem of a shop that features plants, statuary, fountains and locally-crafted gifts in a setting that reflects the bookstore's delightfully peaceful and pleas- ant vibe. "We hear all the time that this place has a good feeling," says Fridlund. And that, more than anything else, is perhaps the reason for Pilgrim's Way's endurance. Visit Pilgrim's Way on Dolores between 5th and 6th, in Carmel, online at www.pilgrimsway.com, or call 831/624-4955.
