Helping the Ar ts to Thrive in Monterey County B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D T he arts are the lifeblood of a civilized society. That's why famed photographer Ansel Adams led the way to the creation of the Arts Council for Monterey County in 1982. "Our mission is to improve the quality of life for everyone in our region through the arts," says Executive Director Paulette Lynch. The council fulfills that mission through educational outreach, including the Professional Artists in the Schools program that touches thousands of students each year. Other programs include Poetry Out Loud, which introduces high school students to poetry through memory, perform- ance and competition. Funding for the Arts Council comes from local businesses, education groups and individu- als plus grants from such organizations as the David and Lucille Packard, Monterey Peninsula and Pebble Beach Company Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. "We find over and over that the arts are the answer to helping people in all circumstances develop their full potential," Lynch says. The Arts Council is dedicated to that goal. The annual Champions of the Arts Gala, honor- ing key individuals in the county's art community, takes place February 2.
