ODS funds research on dietary supplements BETHESDA, MD—The office of dietary supplements (ODS) will fund research on the role of dietary supple- ments and/or their ingredients on health maintenance and disease pre- vention. ODS has committed $6 mil- lion to fund 20 research awards in 2019 and another 20 research awards in 2020. Primary consideration will be given to areas of dietary supple- ment research that are lacking or lag- ging; that clarify gaps, opportunities, and balance between benefits and risks where data conflicts; that target special population groups where additional science on dietary supple- ments is needed; and that focus on the use of dietary supplements in improving or maintaining health and reducing the risk of chronic disease. ODS will also fund validation stud- ies of analytical methods for dietary supplement constituents, building on existing National Institute of Health awards to support the performance and publication of formal single-labo- ratory validation studies of quantita- tive analytical methods. ODS has committed $1 million to fund four awards per fiscal year in 2019 and 2020. The methods proposed for vali- dation must be used to identify and quantify dietary supplement-relevant chemical constituents, such as chemi- cal compounds, adulterants, and con- taminants, or their metabolites in experimental reagents, raw materials, and/or clinical specimens.
