Bold Strokes Showcase the Sea A significant retrospective of one of the most important and prolific early California artists, Armin Hansen, comes to Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) this fall. "The Artful Voyage" showcases Hansen's love for the Monterey Peninsula and those who worked the sea. MMA Executive Director Charlotte Eyerman explains that Hansen's masterful depictions of Monterey, the ocean, and the people who worked the sea make his work extremely relevant. "He was one of the most iconic…early California painters and is very well represented in our collection," she says. "He captures a moment in time that is still important ecologically, economically and environmentally to this area." Influenced both by German Expressionism and French Impressionism, Hansen's works were technically advanced. "His ver y bold use of color makes him so modern," Eyerman says. "He has…an almost geo- metric simplicity and straightforwardness that makes his compositions ver y clear…His way of painting is indebted to French Impressionists, with the texture from his brush strokes and how he captures the effects of atmosphere and light." A San Francisco native, Hansen spent years study- ing and painting in Europe. In 1913, Hansen took a lumber schooner to Monterey from San Francisco, and several years later, established a year-round residence on Pacific Street. A respected teacher, he exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and others. In 1927, Hansen became an original member of the Carmel Art Association. "The Ar tful Voyage," organized by the Pasadena Museum of California Ar t and curated by Scott Shields of the Crocker Ar t Museum in Sacramento, includes almost 100 pieces by Hansen from public and pri- vate collections, including from MMA, some of which have never been publicly shown. "There is a freshness to his approach," Eyerman says. "It is a really mon- umental occasion for us to share this exhibition." "Armin Hansen: The Artful Voyage" takes place October 29, 2015-March 7, 2016. The exhibit is at Monterey Museum of Art—La Mirada, 720 Via Mirada, Monterey.
