Jonny Lang Friday, Nov. 6 Golden State Theatre, Monterey G rammy-winning blues/soul ar tist Jonny Lang has been playing, recording and touring for more than 18 years, but he's still a youthful 34 years old. In fact, he was only 16 years old when he released the critically acclaimed, multi-platinum album "Lie to Me" in 1997. And even at this young age, he's regarded as one of the grizzled veterans of the blues world and and one of the best guitar players in that genre. He won his first Grammy in 2006 for the gospel-influenced "Turn Around." His latest album, "Fight For My Soul," shows his maturity as an artist and that he's not just a one-trick blues pony, but an artist who has found his true voice. www.goldenstatetheatre.com. 17th Annual Monterey Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival Nov. 20-22 Monterey County Fair & Event Center, Monterey T his unique and popular Western music and culture festival moves over to the sprawling 22-acre Monterey County Fair & Event Center for the first time, which seems appro- priate since the main arena has been used for horse shows and the Monterey County Fair is held on its grounds. And, Monterey County has a rich tradition of ranching and farming, making an event like this not so farfetched as it might seem. Some of the top artists of the genre will perform, including Michael Martin Murphey, Don Edwards, Sons of the San Joaquin, Waddie Mitchell, RW Hampton, Katy Moffatt, Bruce Forman & Cow Bop, and Sourdough Slim. So cowboy up and get down to the fairgrounds for a great weekend of cow- boy music, poetry and Western gear. www.mon- tereycowboy.org. Pink Martini with special guest David Meltzer Tuesday, Dec. 8 Golden State Theatre, Monterey T his performance marks the 11th annual benefit concert curated by Jesse Goodman Presents for Big Sur's Henry Miller Memorial Library, a bookstore, performance space and arts center that has drawn some of the world's most celebrated artists. Joining Pink Martini, whose repertoire has been described as falling "somewhere between a 1930s' Cuban dance orchestra, a classical music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band, and Japanese film noir," will be David Meltzer, Beat Generation poet, jazz guitarist, and author of more than 50 books of poetry and prose. See a great show and support a great cause. Proceeds from this event will help the library address some pressing challenges, includ- ing updating its water system and bathrooms. henrymiller.org, www.goldenstatetheatre.com.
