"Our dogs will love and admire the meanest of us, and feed our colossal vanity with their uncritical homage. " ~ Agnes Repplier Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL 84 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • H O L I D A Y 2 0 1 5 Hannah S he may be 17 (that's her early 80s, in human years), but Hannah still reports to the office at Preferred Properties in Carmel every day. "She sits on an ottoman by the window," says owner Carol Crandall. "Passersby can't resist her. They come in to take pictures." Carol and Hannah moved to Carmel together in 2003, and this friendly poodle took to Carmel-by-the-Sea—and especially canine-friendly Carmel Beach— immediately. She doesn't run on the beach as much as she used to at her advanced age, though, mostly staying in the Preferred Properties office. "She's actually my 'client bait,' Crandall says with a laugh. "Once, while I let her outside, I struck up a conversation with a gentleman who even- tually ended up buying a $3 million home. All because of Hannah." Coco Chanel I 'd like you to meet Coco Chanel," says Nargis Lengacher. "We just call her 'Coco.'" A 3-year-old Pomeranian and Spaniel mix, Coco spends her days with Nargis and husband Andre, owners of Lugano Swiss Bistro in the Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel. "All our friends ask for her," Lengacher adds. "When customers sit at the patio, she jumps into their laps to say hello." And true to her name, Coco Chanel loves to shop. "She is a genuine 'shoe girl," Lengacher says. Her favorite place to visit in the Barnyard is Hedi's Shoes. The shop may not stock her paw size, but it's certain that Coco will spread some love every time she visits.
