In 1956, Hugus did so well in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race that he got an invitation to come back the next year. As a Porsche dealer, he had requested a 550 Spyder to be a part of the Porsche team, but Porsche responded that they would only select the best racers for the event. "They humored him," Walker says. "They said, 'We will sell you one and have it delivered to the track, and you can race with our team as an independent entry, but you can't have one with the latest technology.' He accepted the terms graciously, and he defeated the two Porsche teams and came in 7th overall."
