Writers hav e made their wa y to Mo nter ey Co unty fo r well ov er 1 0 0 years. Painters pre - ceded them, trying to catch that impossibly beautiful blend of land and light here, enlivened by a soul of its own. Ar tists of every stripe f ollowed, but writers, whether here for a season or generation, have tried to paint that soul stuff onto a canvas of words. It took a natural disaster to shuffle the first phalanx of writers here: San Francisco's 1906 quake sent a cluster of ar tists, writers and bohemians from their destroyed homes to tents and cabins in Carmel- b y-the-Sea. Among those earl y scrib b lers was the poet Jeff ers, whose hand-built Tor House and Ha wk To w er are popular f or tours toda y. Jack London, Sinclair Lewis and Ambrose Bierce numbered among the early writers frequenting George Sterling's Carmel ar tist's colon y. But long preceding them was Rober t Louis Stev enson, who ma y hav e used his 19th-centur y admiration of stunning Point Lobos as a model for "Treasure Island." Henry Miller's exuberant, rambling prose was well mated to the extravagant beauties (and colorful eccentrics) of 1940s Big Sur. Photo: The Pat Hathaway Collection/CAviews.com
