Oktoberfest Brings German Spirit to Monterey B Y R E N E E B R I N C K S F ans of Bavarian food, drink and music will find plenty of reasons to say "Prost!" when Monterey Bay Oktoberfest returns to the Monterey County Fair & Event Center on October 1 and 2, 2016. The event, hosted by Andre and Nargis Lengacher of Carmel's Lugano Swiss Bistro, offers an expanded schedule packed with fes- tivities. In addition to live music by several bands, including Allgau Yetis, a 13-piece group from Germany, there will be dancing, Dachshund races, car displays and a parade. Miss Oktoberfest and Jr. Miss Oktoberfest pageants take place on Saturday afternoon. "It's a great community affair. Many people come dressed in their lederhosen or dirndl, and it's all very festive," says Nargis. German beer remains a big draw, too, with pours by Spaten, Hofbrau and others avail- able for purchase. Food vendors will ser ve authentic German and American treats, and some 50 craftspeople will sell their work. Parents can expect bounce houses, a carousel and children's games. The Lengachers believe that this inclusive approach contributes to the success of the annual event, which raised more than $15,000 for local charities last year. "It brings family and friends together every year," Andre says.
