Cultural Event Tantalizes Tastebuds and Awakens the Agave Spirit B Y J A N N A L O P E Z I n spite of many misperceptions, tequila is one of fastest growing spirits in the world. In fact, celebrities like Sammy Hagar, George Clooney, Justin Timberlake, Carlos Santana and NBA leg- end Bill Walton have all recognized agave's star power. If you're try-curious, and want to learn about the vibrant tradition that's so integral to tequila while sampling some of the world's best offerings, Monterey Bay Tequila & Cuisine is the perfect event to attend. Each year, Monterey Bay Tequila & Cuisine partners with a local nonprofit to raise funds through an on-site auction. This year, the benefi- ciary is Rancho Cielo, a place where first-time youth offenders and underserved youth get a second chance though education and vocation- al training. One such program is the Drummond Culinary Academy where youth are trained and prepared for cooking and catering professions through hands-on internships and training. Held on Saturday, October 8th, at the Hyatt Regency Grand Ballroom, guests can sample fine tequila flavors, meet the master distillers who craft them, and indulge in delicious food-pairings prepared by some of the hottest local chefs.
