Healthy Earth, Healthy Kids
What started as a Meatless Monday pilot in 15
Brooklyn schools to teach children about the
health and environmental benefits of eating
less meat, has turned into a districtwide policy
passed by New York City's Mayor Bill DeBlasio.
Starting this September, 1,800 New York City
schools will officially give up meat one day a
week, based on the premise that eating less
meat reduces the environmental impact on
the planet, and offers a more nutritious meal.
Cherry Dumaual, spokesperson for
Meatless Monday, the nonprofit initiative of
The Monday Campaigns whose goal is to
reduce meat consumption by 15 percent,
says, "Through Meatless Monday, students will
become more aware of the role plant-based
foods play in their health and the environment.
This learning could have a positive effect on
their health and wellbeing throughout their
lives, as well as their understanding of the role
of food choices on the environment."
MeatlessMondays.com offers a variety of
resources, including a book that features
30 tasty, bulk-scale, child-friendly meatless
recipes that meet the requirements of the
National School Lunch Program.
