SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL Carmel's Brita Sigourney Medals in Winter Olympics F Former President Barack Obama visited the Monterey Peninsula in February, arriving as the 2018 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am took place in Pebble Beach. According to local news sources, the 44th presi- dent landed at the Monterey Jet Center and stayed at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa on Cannery Row. Obama reportedly attended a pri- vate AT&T leadership conference, and also played golf at Cypress Point. President Obama Visits Monterey and Takes in a Round of Golf F reestyle skier and Carmel native Brita Sigourney medaled in the 2018 Winter Olympics held this Februar y in PyeongChang, South Korea. Sigourney, a 28-year-old two- time Olympian, earned a bronze in the women's ski halfpipe competition. "My first Olympics I just didn't know what to expect, and I was just so happy to be there," Sigourney said, in a Februar y ar ticle at TeamUSA.org, the U.S. Olympic Committee's website. "This time I really wanted it." Despite facing multiple injuries and sur- geries, Sigourney has made a name for her- self as one of the world's top freeskiers. She was the first woman to land a 1080 in a competition halfpipe run, and she is a three- time X Games medalist. Sigour ney has also earned top-10 finishes in sever al FIS Wor ld Cup competitions. "I feel like I've over- come so much," Sigourney told Team USA. "It definitely helps to have an Olympic medal to prove ever y- thing I've overcome was wor th it, and all those surgeries were wor th it, and to keep fighting was wor th it, and all that rehab and physical therapy were wor th it." The Pacific Grove mainstay Passionfish earned a 2018 James Beard Award nomination in the Outstanding Wine Program category. Wine Director Jannae Lizza works with owners Ted and Cindy Walter to curate the wide-rang- ing list, which spotlights blends by the bottle, half bottle and glass and complements the restaurant's menu of sustainably sourced seafood. Winners will be announced at the 2018 James Beard Awards Gala, which takes place in Chicago on May 7. Richard Engel of NBC News profiled the work of Dr. Jeffrey Lewis and his colleagues at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey during seg- ments broadcast in early March. Engel explored open-source intelligence research taking place at the institute's James Martin Center for Nonprolifer- ation Studies, featuring some of the tools, tech- niques and team members working to gain informa- tion about North Korea's nuclear capabilities.
