Carmel Bach Festival Celebrates 81st Year with Creative Programming B Y B R E T T W I L B U R T he Carmel Bach Festival started in 1935 as a four-day concert series at the Sunset School and Carmel Mission Basilica and has evolved into an internationally renowned two- week music festival each July. Managing Director Steve Friedlander explains that while "Bach is our middle name and most frequently performed composer…there is a lot of great music by a lot of different composers." To celebrate the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, his music will be performed through- out the festival. New this year are the Bach Foyer Concerts at the Sunset Center Lobby at 1pm each week day of the festival. Eclectic pair- ings continue, such as a mix of baroque and tango with the Four Seasons Concerti by Vivaldi paired with Piazzolla, and A Night at the Opera with selections from Handel, Mozar t, Beethoven, Wagner, Strauss and Bernstein. Popular events include the candlelight pro- cession and concert in the Carmel Mission Basilica with "exquisite, sacred Buxtehude music," and the Young Artists' Showcase. "The festival has a great tradition…and we need to keep it interesting and fresh for every- body," Friedlander says. "The main thing I'm pleased with is the variety of programming and the selection. It really engages people and touches their hearts and emotions. You don't really have to know much about classical music. There is something here that reaches every- body." The Carmel Bach Festival takes place July 14-28. For more information, go to www.bachfestival.org. SHORTCUTS EVENT "The Carmel Bach Festival is fun, and is distinguished by being performed at a very high artistic level," says Managing Director Steve Friedlander. 58 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 8 Photo: Randy Tunnell / Carmel Bach Festival
