Continuing Andre Lengacher's Legacy at Lugano Swiss Bistro B Y B R E T T W I L B U R F or 23 years, Carmel's Lugano Swiss Bistro has been beloved by locals and visitors for its alpine-inspired dishes—fondue, schnitzel, sausage platters—cozy décor, and the vibrant and warm personalities of its owners. Sadly, Chef Andre Lengacher passed away last year after 27 years of marriage to his elegant wife Nargis, who has continued his legacy at the restaurant. "We are family oriented, doggy friendly, have a heated patio, live music every Thursday, host lots of private events, and dance and sing and have a lot of fun. Andre always had a big smile. It's different without him," Nargis acknowledges. "He hosted the Monterey Bay Oktoberfest and loved dressing up and singing and yodeling. I am continuing with the help of a lot of friends, Chef Tom Bednarski, and server Julio Acosta, who has been with me for 17 years. Everyone is so kind." Nargis, an extremely gracious host, says she is doing her best to honor her husband's vision. "It gives me a purpose," she says. "Andre was always happy and he always helped people and he loved life. He used to make little gingerbread villages in the restaurant with kids and dress up as Santa. Even when he was sick, he would come in and say hello to everybody.
