The Arts Council for Monterey County honored several area headliners during its 2018 Champions of the Arts Gala, held in February at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa. This year's awards recognized Ramon Silva Ruelas, founding director of the nonprofit dance troupe Tonatiuh – "Danzantes del Quinto Sol," S.T.A.R. Foundation of Monterey County founder and arts philanthropist Reg Huston, contemporary painter Andrew Jackson and First Night Monterey Executive Director Ellen Mar tin, among others. Television and theater profession- al Walt DeFaria, known locally for his work with the Forest Theater Guild, Monterey Symphony and Pacific Repertory Theater, earned this year's lifetime achievement award. D ave Davies, a Kinks co-founder and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, entertaining fans at Monterey's Golden State Theatre. Six-time Grammy winner Art Garfunkel, blues guitarist and songwriter Jonny Lang, folk artist Arlo Guthrie, and stand-up comedian and social critic Lewis Black also headlined the list performers there in recent months…Singer, songwriter and guitarist Lukas Nelson, son of country music icon Willie Nelson, putting on a sold-out show with Promise of the Real at Carmel Valley's Folktale Winery…PGA professional Ted Potter Jr. edging out Phil Mickelson, Jason Day and two-time past champion Dustin Johnson to win this year's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which also featured defending champion Jordan Spieth, first-time participant Rory McIlroy and a host of other top-name players. Celebrity competitors included actors Clint Eastwood, Bill Murray, Andy Garcia and Josh Duhamel, actress and model Kelly Rohrbach, saxophonist Kenny G and Train lead singer Pat Monahan…Novelist Anne Lamott, author of "Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year," American rock guitarist and songwriter John Hiatt, and musician Shelby Lynne, who won a best new artist Grammy in 1999, appearing at Carmel's Sunset Center.
