NCAA South Regionals (40-9) 1978 NCAA TeamBLAIR GILBERT Hitting a school-record .357 (a record that still stands) as a team, the Tigers roared back to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Metro Tournament Championship. The Tigers went 40-9 that season, the program’s first 40-win campaign and the first of legendary coach Bobby Kilpatrick’s career. After sweeping through the Metro Tournament, the Tigers dropped their first game in the double-elimination NCAA tournament before roaring back to win three in a row to force a final with North Carolina. The Tigers had the Tar Heels on the ropes before ultimately dropping the deciding game, 11-9. TERRY PRESSGROVE 2011 Memphis Baseball Experience • Page 35
