Jewel Wednesday, May 11 Golden State Theatre, Monterey S inger-songwriter Jewel's familiar rags-to-suc- cess back story is hard to ignore, but also hard to ignore is the fact that she's won four Grammy Awards, has sold more than 27 million albums worldwide and that her 1995 debut Pieces of You, went 12 times platinum and is one of the best-selling debut albums of all time. Her music is warm, sensitive and poetic and doesn't really reflect her hardscrabble early days. But classic songs like "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games," have cemented her reputation as an indelible spirit and terrific songwriter. www.goldenstatetheatre.com. HipNic VIII May 20-22 Fernwood Resort, Big Sur E ven in its eighth year, this is still one of those under-the-radar, only-in-Big-Sur music festi- vals, primarily because they don't advertise it much, there really aren't many "name" bands and it involves a lot of camping and late nights. But that's also its appeal. Jackie Greene is the biggest, along with festival co-founders The Mother Hips, plus Sensations, Par Value County Band, and Little Wings just a few of the eclectic artists scheduled to play. Single-day tickets to this gathering of the tribes are available after the 270 camping passes are sold out. www.folkyeah.com. California Roots Music and Arts Festival May 27-29 Monterey County Fair and Event Center A s the name implies, "Cali Roots" leans more to the Cali side of the reggae music equation, with such young and amped-up bands like Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution, Pepper, The Expendables, The Green, and J Boog gracing the main stages. But the traditional Jamaican side is also represented with artists such as Barrington Levy, Stephen Marley and Damien "Jr. Gong" Marley, sons of the great Bob Marley. With a dazzling roster like that, no wonder it sells out every year and has become one of the largest reggae/rock festivals in the country. Get those tickets soon or you'll be forced to scour the secondary ticket market. www.californiarootsfestival.com. Santa Cruz American Music Festival May 27-29 Aptos Village Park, Aptos T his hybrid music festival is still trying to find its footing musically, but it's only the second year of what used to be the Santa Cruz Blues Festival, so they deserve some leeway. The first day is particularly strong, with blues legend Buddy Guy, New Orleans sensation Trombone Shorty, and gospel steel ace Robert Randolph anchoring the bill. The second day is a tougher draw, but for country fans should be a delight, what with Josh Turner, David Nail and Granger Smith rockin' the crowd. It's a gorgeous venue with beer, wine and food vendors and a laid-back Santa Cruz vibe. www.santacruzamericanmusicfestival.com. EVERYONE LOVES A LIST, RIGHT?
