Monterey Rock & Rod Festival June 24-25 Monterey County Fair and Event Center and downtown Monterey T his is the Monterey equivalent of the little festival that could. Not as big and well known as the jazz and Cali Roots festivals, this one has something different: a classic car show, a retro-hip '50s and '60 vibe and two venues, Friday at the fairgrounds and Saturday in down- town Monterey, where pre-1975 cars will be showcased. Add the retro-rock sound of Mitch Ryder (of Detroit Wheels and "Jenny Take a Ride" and "Devil With a Blue Dress" fame), plus local acts like Rollin' & Tumblin' and Linda Arceo Band. The Gateway Center, a nonprofit that teaches life skills to adults with intellectual dis- abilities, is the wor thy beneficiary. www.montereyrockrod.com. Al Di Meola Saturday, June 25 Golden State Theatre, Monterey A sk any jazz guitarist for their top 10 gui- tarists of all time and invariably Di Meola will be on most of those lists. Di Meola burst out of the music scene after he joined the leg- endary Return to Forever fusion band that fea- tured hall-of-famers Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White in 1974. Not content to play just fusion, Di Meola went on to collab- orate with artists such as John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and to perform world music on both electric and acoustic guitars, further broadening his fan base. Virtuoso doesn't even begin to describe this prodigious talent. www.goldenstatetheatre.com.. City of Monterey's Fourth of July Parade and Big Little Backyard Barbecue Monday, July 4 Downtown Monterey and Colton Hall lawn M onterey's Four th of July celebration brings left coasters to middle America, where an old-fashioned parade, community bar- becue and kids' games all converge for some traditional Independence Day frivolity. Add live music by acts such as Killer Queens, the world's only all-female tribute to Queen, and you have the area's most popular Fourth party. And it's all free to attend. USA! USA!
